Cosmetic Dentist in east Longmeadow
A beautiful smile may be the key to opening doors to a new career or relationship, but a very small number of patients are completely happy with their natural smiles. That’s why cosmetic dentistry services at Scannell & Hollinger have become so popular. We offer conservative and comfortable cosmetic dentistry to enhance the appearance of smiles concealing and correcting dental chips, cracks, gaps, and stains. In the past, amalgam fillings were the go to treatment for minor cavities and dental damage. While amalgams offer effective and durable dental restoration, they are not the most cosmetic solution. The silver or gray color mars the appearance of patients’ smiles especially when used to correct those teeth visible when patients smile. At Scannell & Hollinger, we offer a cosmetically superior alternative, tooth-colored, composite resin fillings. These fillings are shaded to match the natural hue of patients’ smiles blending seamlessly. In addition to the superior appearance for patients’ smiles, composite resin fillings offer a number of oral health advantages including:
- Unlike amalgams that expand and contract with changes in temperature, composite resin is not sensitive to these temperature fluctuations decreasing the odds that healthy tooth structure will be damaged.
- The composite resin is positioned directly over the prepared tooth and hardened into position. This direct bond with the tooth is stronger and more durable than the amalgam fillings.
- Composites are the most conservative treatment option. We are able to retain a larger amount of dental structure as these fillings are applied directly to the damaged tooth with no need for additional enamel removal to accommodate the dental cement.

All-ceramic restorations are another service that blurs the line between cosmetic and restorative care. These restorative treatment options repair the form and function of teeth with the most natural appearance. Unlike porcelain bonded to metal restorations which wear away revealing the darkly colored metal below, ceramic crowns, inlays, onlays, and bridges are crafted from a single block of ceramic dyed to perfectly match patients’ smiles. Even as the ceramic begins to wear away, it retains its natural appearance. Our skilled East Longmeadow dentists offer same day dental restoration with high quality ceramics crafted using our state-of-the-art CEREC system. Whether patients prefer to repair their smiles in a single visit or over the course of two appointments, our high quality ceramic crowns and other restorations offer long lasting results that look as good as they feel. In many cases, our team is even able to replace less cosmetic restorations with ceramic options.
One of the most popular cosmetic treatment options are porcelain veneers, thin sheaths of dental grade porcelain placed over the front facing surfaces of teeth. Veneers are an effective way to conceal any number of smile flaws including chips, cracks, gaps, and stains. The process is simple. We remove a small amount of surface tooth enamel so the veneer blends seamlessly into the natural smile line. We then collect dental impressions that are used by our lab to craft custom veneers. In the meantime, we place temporary veneers to protect the prepared teeth. Once the custom porcelain veneers are returned to our practice, patients exchange the temporary for a custom veneer. Veneers are comfortable, beautiful, and they give patients the opportunity to achieve the picture-perfect smiles they desire.

Invisalign® Clear Braces
Invisalign® clear braces offer patients of all ages an opportunity to correct their smiles without the mouth full of metal brackets and wires. The Invisalign® orthodontic system uses a series of clear, plastic alignment trays to gently shift teeth into their ideal position. Each set of aligners is crafted to represent a step closer to the desired results. When worn over the course of several weeks, teeth are shifted to match the position represented by the aligners. Patients visit our East Longmeadow practice about every four to six weeks so we can ensure patients’ smiles are progressing according to plan. In about twelve months, patients see the dramatic results they desire. Because the trays are removable, patients continue to eat all of their favorite foods, maintain their regular oral hygiene routine, and smile confidently throughout treatment.
At-Home Tooth Whitening
Store bought teeth whitening toothpastes, mouth rinses, gels, and strips promise dramatic teeth whitening results, but in most cases, they are unable to deliver on these promises. The professional-grade at-home teeth whitening kits from Scannell & Hollinger combine custom crafted application trays with professional grade whitening gel to deliver smiles up to ten shades brighter over the course of about two weeks.

Cosmetic Dentistry FAQs
By using specific aesthetic treatments, our dentists can help you achieve the smile of your dreams. Cosmetic dentistry can improve the size, shape, color, proportion, and even alignment of your pearly whites so that you can smile with complete confidence. While you may be excited to attain the smile you’ve always wanted, it’s perfectly normal to have a few questions about the process. That’s why we’ve taken the liberty of answering some of the most frequently asked questions that we receive about cosmetic dentistry.
Will My Dental Insurance Cover Cosmetic Dentistry?
In the majority of cases, dental insurance carriers will not cover the cost of cosmetic treatments, but there are always some exceptions. This is because many cosmetic treatments actually overlap into restorative dentistry, such as tooth-colored fillings or all-ceramic restorations. If a cosmetic treatment is deemed necessary to restore your oral health, your insurance provider may elect to cover the treatment up to 80% depending on your individual policy.
Our practice is in-network with two of the most common dental insurance providers: Delta Dental and BlueCross BlueShield. We’ll also be more than happy to file claims on your behalf for any other insurance carrier to help minimize your out-of-pocket costs and maximize your benefits.
Can My Teen Benefit from Cosmetic Dentistry?
We know that teenagers can be especially conscious of their image. Luckily, there are several cosmetic treatments that can benefit your teen, such as Invisalign to discreetly correct misaligned teeth. In fact, certain cosmetic procedures might even be right for younger children, such as tooth-colored fillings to repair cavities. The best way to determine which treatments would potentially benefit your child or teen would be to schedule a consultation with us.
How Long Will the Process Take?
There is no fixed answer to this question because every treatment, and every patient, is different and will take different lengths of time to achieve their dream smiles. You can get the results you want in just one or two appointments, like tooth-colored fillings or porcelain veneers. Invisalign, on the other hand, can take a year or more to fully straighten your smile. Again, we ask that you schedule a consultation with us to determine precisely how long your treatment will take.
Is Cosmetic Dentistry Right for Me?
Virtually anyone who is dissatisfied with some aspect of the smile they see in the mirror would be a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry. However, before we can begin a purely cosmetic treatment, we must ensure that your mouth is free of infection. If we detect any cavities or gum disease, we’ll have to address those issues before going through with a cosmetic procedure.
