If you’ve lost some or even all of your natural teeth, then you may have considered getting dentures. After all, today’s dentures are several times more comfortable and lifelike than the prosthetics your grandparents used to wear. Once the dentures process is complete, no one should even be able to tell that they’re not your real teeth! There’s just one question: how long does it take to get dentures? Here’s what you need to know about the process of rebuilding your smile with dentures.

The Steps in the Dentures Process

Each denture is custom-made to meet each patient’s unique needs and preferences. So, the dentures process will require multiple steps, some of which include:

Consultation & Preliminary Treatments

First, you’ll need to visit your dentist for a consultation. After closely examining your mouth to make sure you’re a good candidate for dentures, they’ll talk to you about the specific goals you have for your new smile.

Some patients have to undergo certain procedures before they’re ready for dentures. For example, you might need to have one or more teeth removed. The extraction sites must heal before dentures can be placed, which can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.

Creating Your Denture

Once you’ve healed from any preparatory treatments, your dentist takes impressions and measurements of your mouth. Using these data, the dentist designs a wax mockup of your denture, which is sent to a local dental lab. It might take two weeks or longer before your new prosthetic is ready.

Adjustment Appointments

You may have to attend multiple appointments to adjust the mockup. After all, your new smile must look and feel as natural as possible.

Placing Your Dentures

You won’t receive your final denture until all necessary adjustments have been made. In some cases, you might need to make even more adjustments as your mouth grows accustomed to the denture.

Immediate Dentures

Living without teeth is difficult, which is why some dentists offer immediate dentures. The process for immediate dentures is a bit different, as impressions and models are made before any teeth are removed. You’ll then receive your immediate denture right after your remaining teeth are extracted. It’s crucial that you follow your dentist’s instructions and don’t remove the denture too soon, as it can lead to severe swelling.

You don’t need to be embarrassed or inconvenienced by missing teeth any longer. Dentures are an easy, affordable way to enjoy having a complete smile that you’ll feel proud to show off.
